Myths about Cancer

This article has been reviewed, edited and approved by Dr Fakhra Qureshi, Consultant Oncologist, Rawalpindi, Pakistan.

Pakistan sees thousands of cancer cases every year, yet many people still rely on myths instead of facts. Here are some common myths — and the truth behind them.

Myth 1: "Cancer is a test from Allah, so we should just stay patient and do nothing."

Truth: Illness is a test from Allah — but Islam never teaches us to sit idle.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Allah has not sent down any disease except that He has also sent down its cure." (Sahih al‑Bukhari 5678; Sahih Muslim 2204)

This means we are expected to seek treatment.

And when a Bedouin man asked the Prophet ﷺ whether he should tie his camel or trust Allah, the Prophet ﷺ replied:

"Tie your camel, and trust in Allah." (Jami` at‑Tirmidhi 2517)

Meaning: Take action first, then rely on Allah. Patience does not mean passiveness. Seeking treatment is part of tawakkul.

Myth 2: "Cancer is always fatal."

Truth: Many cancers are curable when found early. Breast cancer, cervical cancer, colon cancer, and skin cancers have high survival rates with timely treatment.

Myth 3: "Only old people get cancer."

Truth: Cancer can affect anyone — children, young adults, and older people. In Pakistan, breast cancer is common in women aged 30–50, not just the elderly.

Myth 4: "If you feel fine, you don't need check‑ups."

Truth: Many cancers cause no symptoms at all in the early stages. Feeling "normal" doesn't mean everything is fine.

In Pakistan, more than half of cancers are diagnosed late because people wait until they feel pain — but pain often comes very late.

Early check‑ups save lives.

Myth 5: "If there is no pain, it cannot be cancer."

Truth: Pain is not a reliable sign. Many cancers do not cause pain at all, until advanced stage.

Myth 6: "Cancer treatment is worse than the disease."

Truth: Modern treatments are far safer than before. Side effects can be managed, and many patients continue normal life during treatment.

Myth 7: "Cancer is contagious — stay away from cancer patients."

Truth: Cancer does not spread from person to person. You can hug, sit with, and care for a cancer patient without any risk.

Why these myths matter

In Pakistan, over 60% of cancers are diagnosed late, often because people believe these myths and delay medical help. Breaking these myths can save lives — in families, workplaces, and communities.
