Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death in women worldwide — and it is almost entirely preventable. The HPV vaccine is one of the most powerful cancer prevention tools ever created. Yet in Pakistan, awareness of the HPV vaccine remains very low.
What is HPV? Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a very common virus transmitted through intimate skin-to-skin contact. Most people will be infected with HPV at some point in their lives. In most cases, the body clears the infection naturally. But some high-risk types of HPV — particularly HPV 16 and 18 — can persist and cause:
HPV causes nearly all cases of cervical cancer — over 99%.
How does the HPV vaccine work? The vaccine protects against the most dangerous HPV types. It trains your immune system to recognise and fight the virus before it can cause harm. Crucially, the vaccine works best when given BEFORE a person becomes sexually active — because it prevents infection, it doesn't treat an existing one.
Who should get the vaccine?
Is the vaccine safe? Yes. The HPV vaccine has been used worldwide for over 15 years. Hundreds of millions of doses have been given. It has been studied extensively and is proven to be safe. Common side effects are mild:
These resolve within a day or two.
Why is cervical cancer so common in Pakistan?
The impact of the HPV vaccine: In countries like Australia and the UK, where the HPV vaccine is widely used, cervical cancer rates have dropped dramatically. Australia is on track to eliminate cervical cancer entirely within the next decade.
In Pakistan, the vaccine is available at some private hospitals and clinics. Parents should ask about vaccinating their daughters aged 9–14.
Cervical cancer screening is still needed: Even if vaccinated, women aged 21–65 should still get regular Pap smears, because the vaccine doesn't protect against all HPV types.
Key message: The HPV vaccine prevents cancer. It is safe, effective, and works best when given to girls aged 9–14. If you have daughters, nieces, or sisters in this age group, ask your doctor about the HPV vaccine. It is one of the most important things you can do to protect them from cervical cancer later in life.
